Olive oil

We usually start the olive harvest on Monte de Matacães at the beginning of November. This usually ends by the beginning of December. The fruit, which is harvested by hand, is cleaned the same day and gently processed into first-class oil using the farm's own modern centrifugal plant.

All Organic

On Monte de Matacães, the varieties Arinto, Verdelho (white), Aragonez, Alicante Bouchet, Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro (red) are planted on a good 7 hectares.

Our grapes are harvested by hand with helpers from the region. After the harvest, the grapes are selected on the sorting belt and only the best fruit finds its way into the fermentation tanks.

Our wines are pressed and matured with the utmost care by the neighbouring winery Herdade da Cardeira according to strict organic standards.

This year, we began harvesting at the beginning of October. It lasted four weeks. The trees, newly planted four and five years ago, were already bearing abundant fruit. A total of almost ten tons of olives were harvested, resulting in an oil yield of 940 kilograms.

We are particularly proud of the 2024 results. The analyses of our oils are excellent. The polyphenol values are particularly outstanding. We bottled the oils with a content of over 700 mg per kilogram of oil separately.

The oil is not only healthy, but also delicious. The fresh, fruity bouquet is accompanied by the gentle bitterness typical of early harvests. If you take your time, you'll recognize the light flavor of fresh artichokes in our oil. This wonderful product can also be enjoyed simply with some bread.

We disclose the laboratory values of our oils; please note that these may change over time.

Our relatively early harvests have a very nice side effect: the harvest from the Monteira hill has given us an oil with over 750 mg per kilogramme of polyphenols. We bottled this separately.

Polyphenols are said to help with diabetes, heart and circulatory problems, have an anti-inflammatory effect and also prevent cancer.

Their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects have been proven and substantiated. In particular, polyphenols prevent fats in the blood from oxidising and forming deposits (atheromas) in the blood vessels.

The responsible EU Commission allows oils with a high polyphenol content (from 250 mg/kg) to be labelled: ‘Olive oil polyphenols help to protect blood lipids from oxidative damage.’

In addition, the corresponding regulation (No. 432/2012) points out that a positive effect develops when 20 g are taken daily.

The case of over 750 mg/kg is not regulated by the responsible commission. In any case, this oil is not only good for your health, but also good for the mind and a real experience.

This year, only the fruits of the old olive trees of the Galiga variety were harvested.

With its golden yellow colour with a slightly greenish accent, the connoisseur of our oil can already visually perceive its fruity notes. They will not be disappointed when they taste it, but will be delighted by the intense, fresh and fruity flavour, combined with a harmonious balance of gentle bitterness and velvety softness.

Enjoy our olive oil as the perfect accompaniment to fresh white bread, as a refinement for salads or for drizzling over grilled meat, fish and vegetables. The versatility of our olive oil makes it an indispensable accompaniment to a wide range of dishes.

Discover the quality and care that goes into every drop of our oil and be inspired by the authentic Portuguese flavours.

The 1,000 or so ancient and proud olive trees on Monte de Matacães were supplemented with over 3,500 new plantings in 2019 and 2020. The old, tried-and-tested varieties Galiga and Cobrançosa, which are resistant to disease, were used. These will produce the first significant harvests in 2024 and 2025.

The differences in flavour of our oils depending on the harvest date are clearly noticeable. The majority of our production is bottled "blended", i.e. mixed. However, we bottle a small quantity of single-variety oils according to harvest date. Try it for yourself!

Our oils are regularly analysed by the relevant bodies (Instituto Superior De Agronomia, Universitade Lisboa), consistently being ranked as “very good to excellent”.
